Where were you born and raised? I was born and raised in Connecticut, and lived in New Mexico for many years.
When did you first show an interest or talent for art and design? My childhood was filled with arts and creativity. My father was a editor, writer, and art historian, my mother took textile design classes, so I was encouraged to be artistic. My love was always painting and illustration.
What led you to enroll as a student at FIDM? After leaving my position as an art director at the Los Angeles Times Magazine国产偷拍视频, I took a Surface Design course at UCLA Extension where the instructor saw my passion for pattern and highly recommended I attend FIDM, which was a terrific decision.
How did FIDM help prepare you for your career as a surface pattern designer? I was exposed to so many valuable skills and knowledge at FIDM, from technical repeat CAD work, to painting for pattern with gouache, watercolor dyes, to trend analysis and textile design history
What have been some of your career highlights over the years? While at the Los Angeles Times Magazine, I received awards for art direction of illustration, and was a chosen to be a juror for the Communication Arts Illustration Annual. I’d say my involvement with Chairing Styles while at FIDM was certainly a highlight, especially as my textile design was licensed to the LA Phil Store at Walt Disney Concert Hall where it was featured on many products from silk scarves to bags and earrings.
I am thrilled to have an ongoing collaborative relationship with the LA Phil Hollywood Bowl Store for surface design (applied to t-shirts, mugs, shot glasses, etc.) each summer for the new season at the Bowl. This year’s commission to design a woven throw blanket for the Hollywood Bowl, which has been particularly exciting project.
When did you begin teaching at FIDM and what do you teach?国产偷拍视频 I began teaching immediately after finishing at FIDM in 2012. I teach Portfolio Development, Trend Analysis, Line Development, Surface Design for Textile Design, MPDV and MM: Digital Design & Digital Communication, Bachelors Design: Visual identity and Image.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the faculty?国产偷拍视频 I enjoy the exposure to design, fashion, trend, and the interaction with my colleagues and students.
What advice would you give to a student who would like a similar career to yours? Beyond applying yourself to the wonderful FIDM curriculum, try to occasionally unleash yourself from digital devices and social media. Expose yourself to the arts; visit museums and galleries, and read art and design books. Keep up your own regular sketchbook activity. Follow other artists surface designers work.
